Jaguars extend Jakobi Meyers

Jakobi Meyers Extension

The Jaguars signed Jakobi Meyers to a 3-year, $60 million contract, with $40 million guaranteed. In just 6 games, Meyers has completely transformed the offense, giving them a reliable middle-of-the-field threat as well as a set of sure hands. For years, the Jaguars have tried to find a number one receiver for quarterback Trevor Lawrence. In 2024, they appeared to have found one in Brian Thomas Jr. With his drop in production, along with inconsistent chemistry, BTJ hasn't been the perfect player for Trevor Lawrence, but Meyers has, catching 71% of his targets, seemingly finding an instant connection with the 5th-year quarterback.

In the first eight games of the season, the Jaguars averaged just 18 points a game, scoring over 30 offensive points just once, relying largely on turnovers and special teams scores to aid them. In the 6 games since Jakobi Meyers was acquired, they are now averaging 32 points a game on offense, dominating opponents and putting the AFC on notice.

The impact Meyers has had on 5th-year quarterback Trevor Lawrence cannot be overstated. Lawrence was on pace for his worst statistical season since his rookie year, and the pressure was mounting. Fans and media alike were beginning to question if Lawrence was the long-term answer at quarterback, especially given his contract. Since Meyers joined the team, he has silenced all doubts, playing arguably the best stretch of games in his entire career, and has quickly captured the NFL world's attention.

Shortly before the season, Jakobi Meyers requested a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders and later reaffirmed his stance during the season, stating he "for sure" still wanted to be traded, ultimately leading to his move to Jacksonville. His frustration with his former organization had turned into joy with his new one, talking about the belief he has behind him on his new team.

It is clear the impact both sides have had on each other, which is why this extension was a no-brainer. There are multiple players set to be free agents in the 2026 offseason, which will lead to some tough decisions for general manager James Gladstone. In his short time so far with the Jaguars, Jakobi Meyers made this an easy one, and he will remain in Jacksonville for the near future.
